<br><br>Foreword:<br>Music has a peculiar power to evoke the feelings of times
past. Sometimes these feelings come to us as bittersweet memories, and at
others, it is almost deja vu, as if we were experiencing a shadowy recollection
of a past life. Has something like this ever happened to you? Imagine, you are
enjoying a quiet afternoon, perhaps sipping a cup of fragrant tea while music
plays softly in the background and suddenly, you are transported to another
place and time - a dream so real that you can taste it. When listening to the
captivating voice of Li Yugang, you too will find yourself lost in the
intoxicating dreams of China's early Republican Era.<br>Beginning in 1912 and
lasting until 1949, the Republican Era still holds a fascination and even
nostalgia for many. It was a turbulent time, fraught with many struggles and
changes but from out of this crucible came new hopes and new dreams and a
multitude of new dreamers - poets, patriots, artists, writers and musicians -
whose dreams for the new Republic continue to fire the imagination.<br>The
divine singing of Li Yugang brings to life once again the seductive sounds of
that gilded age - the movies, the nightclubs; beautiful "Shanghai Flowers" in
their form-hugging qipaos and dapper gents in top hats and tails wander through
these songs and call us back to an energetic and elegant age; a time when
everyone was dreaming fabulous dreams.<br>Listening to this album, wistfulness
for that bygone age will fill your heart: "Meeting By Chance" and "Lotus Flower
Blooms" weave their tales of bright beginnings; "Blooming Flowers and Full Moon"
tells of the sweetness of love. In "Wandering the Old Dream" we experience lost
love and faded youth, while the playful "Rose, Rose I Love You"praises the
beloved's tenacity and perseverance; "This Love is not for Me", recounts the
inexpressible sadness at the end of an affair, and "If Only (We Met Before I
Married)" describes a love that can never be. The up-beat energy of "Don't Go So
Fast" (a song inspired by "On the Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe") combines
girlish flirtation with a distinctive Chinese appreciation of the beauty of
springtime, and "Man of My Dreams", with its Latin rhythms and seductive melody
evokes love's longing. "Four Seasons Melody" and "When Will You Come Back?",
both originally made famous by Zhou Xuan in the '30s were later immortalized by
Deng Lijun (Teresa Teng) decades later and continue to be popular to this
day.<br>Today it seems as if we are a thousand lifetimes away from those dark
days and glittering nights, but here, there is always a dream that is waiting
for you. We are thrilled to present the world famous Chinese artist Li Yugang in
one of the most extraordinary projects of his career. Considered a national
treasure, Li has developed a unique artistic expression that includes dancing
and Chinese opera, adding elements of modern popular music and merging each of
these performance styles and techniques into what is known as "Li Yugang's
Style."<br>In the making of this album, critically acclaimed music producer Ye
Yunchuan assembled an all-star roster of nearly seventy artists from six
countries to create a vivid portrait of China's Republican Era in song. Ye is
joined once again by Chinese master recording engineer Li Xiaopei. Working both
at home and abroad, the two have served up an auditory feast that brings these
intoxicating sounds to life once more.<br><br>歌曲内容: <br><br>1.
<br><br>1. Falling Petals (from the film "Murder in the Wedding" )<br>Lyrics,
Composer: Liu Xue'an Original Singer: Lang Yuxiu<br>Recorded: 1936<br>"Falling
Petals" is one of the most beautiful of all Chinese Arts songs, and has been
performed by such singers as Feng Fei Fei, Christine Hsu, Tsai Chin. The song
was first made famous by the 18 year-old singing prodigy Lang Yuxiu. Lang's
talent was discovered by the music director at Pathé when she made her first
record at the age of 16; she would later achieve international fame and came to
be known as one "The Four Chinese Sopranos." Following the war, she would return
to China and become one of the most distinguished vocal music educators in the
newly founded People's Republic.<br><br><br>2.
<br><br>2. Meeting By Chance<br>Lyrics: Lu Li Composer: Zhuang Hong Original
Singer: Wu Yingyin<br>Released in 1950, "Meeting By Chance" was to become one of
the last recordings made in Shanghai by EMI prior to their move to Hong Kong.
The rich orchestration featuring trombone, bass guitar and saxophone already
belong to a new style of music just becoming popular in Asia. On the face of it,
this is a typical love song but given the time when it was written, it is
tempting to sense a little melancholy and uncertainty, as the dreams of the Old
Republic gave way to the dreams of the New China.<br><br><br>3.
<br><br>3. Four Seasons Melody (from the film "Street Angel")<br>Lyrics: Tian
Han Composer: He Luting Original Singer: Zhou Xuan<br>Recorded: 1937<br>Together
with "Shanghai Nights", He Luting's "Four Season Melody" has come to be
identified the world with the turbulent Republican Era and are among the most
famous songs in modern Chinese culture. The song first appeared in the movie
"Street Angel" (1937) and was sung by Zhou Xuan. Her performance, accompanied
only by an erhu fiddle while she fidgeted with her braids, made her an overnight
sensation. Our arrangement of this famous and often-performed song returns to
the simple intimacy of the original version, featuring only guitar and cello as
accompaniment.<br><br><br>4.
<br><br>4. Rose, Rose I Love You ( from the film "The Wandering
Songstress")<br>Lyrics: Wu Cun Composer: Lin Mei Original Singer: Yao
Lee<br>Recorded: 1940<br>The irresistible cheerfulness of "Rose, Rose I Love
You" has been a hit with both Chinese and American audiences, and was remade by
pop singer Frankie Laine in 1951; the only major popular music chart hit in the
United States written by a Chinese composer. While on the surface the lyrics
describe the tenacity of a spunky young lady, when first performed in 1940, the
third year in the war of resistance against Japanese aggression, it also became
a patriotic song in code; the "Rose" here representing the nation of
China.<br><br><br>5.
<br><br>5. This Love is not for Me<br>Lyrics: Lu Li Composer: Yao Min Original
Singer: Yao Lee<br>Recorded: 1948<br>"This Love is not for me" is a seductive
jazz number, full of longing. Originally made famous by Yao Lee, the song has
seldom disappeared from the repertoire and has been enjoying a renaissance
thanks to a whole new generation of popular singers. Gone is the innocence of
shy flirtations and furtive glances of some of the earlier songs: this girl
KNOWS what she wants!<br><br><br>6.
